Vincent Van Gogh's work has risen to the peak of artistic achievements. Although Van Gogh sold only one painting in his life, the aftermath of his work is enormous.
Vincent Van Gogh painted "Irises" in 1889, the year before his death. He was staying at the asylum at Saint Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France and painted "Irises" before his first attack at the asylum.
Van Gogh called this painting "the lightning conductor for my illness", because he felt that he could keep himself from going insane by continuing to paint.Like many of his works, "Irises" was influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The similarities include strong outlines, unusual angles and flattish colors that do not reflect the actual fall of light.
